(New) Google Sites: Start Here
Documentation for using Google Sites seems a bit minimal. At present, Google has some documentation; Steegle is a Google Cloud Partner (whatever that means...) that has some more documentation. I'd recommend the following first steps:
To start: you need to set up your Google Drive. All your website will reside somewhere there.
Next go to https://sites.google.com/new to set up a new site (you'll need to be on your laptop or desktop). Under "Start a new site" click "Blank site" (unless you want to use one of their pre-built sites; the pre-built sites are interesting to look at and experiment on, but ultimately you'll probably want to build your own site from scratch). Some places, like Steegle, will be happy to sell you one of their templates...
You now see your new website's homepage. In the box "Your page title," go ahead and type in something like "My New Website."
Go ahead and experiment from here. I'd suggest: (a) click "Image," and upload an image or choose an image supplied by Google, and then (b) experiment with the anchor icon and the "readibility" icon just to its left; (c) click "Header type," and see what the various options do.
From here, you can go to the right tab and play around, such as : (a) Click "Insert" to insert a Text box, and image, a content block, button, divider, etc. (Note that Google will automatically place each new inserted item on the page; you have limited ability to move them; you can place one below another, one side-by-side with another, but you can't put these inserted items in an arbitrary position.) (b) Click "Pages" to add new pages, menu sections, move the order of pages or make a page a subpage of another or put a page in a menu section. (c) Click "Themes" to change the default theme to another theme provided by Google, or click + to create your own theme, etc.
A lot of working with Google sites involves trying things out and playing around a bit. You can try the buttons below for some (limited) documentation on various aspects of Google sites, courtesy of Google and of Steegle.
When you are ready to publish the site (and any changes you make thereafter), you can click "Publish;" you will then be able to review the changes and you can confirm that you want to publish them; in my experience such changes can take a few minutes to take effect.
At some point you'll want to buy a domain name to link to your site; I forget how this is done, but this wasn't particularly difficult; I believe the instructions are on this google support page.
The Google homepage for Help with Google Sites includes basic startup instructions.
There are a number of help topics on the Google and Steegle websites. Here are some examples:
